Kieran Kinsella is a sculptor and furniture maker based in New York’s Hudson Valley. Largely self-taught through apprenticeships with Adirondack boat builders, timber framers, and furniture makers, he works with traditional carving techniques to uncover new forms within solid tree trunks. Since 2009, he has focused exclusively on carving “stumps” from locally sourced and salvaged logs, creating pieces that blur the line between sculpture and function.

Kinsella works with what he calls “rescue wood”—logs destined for firewood or landfill—reclaiming overlooked material as an homage to nature. His process balances the tree’s raw, organic history with the human urge to shape and refine. Influenced by Shaker ideals of simplicity and intention, he carves each piece with care, often using wooden “butterflies” to honor natural cracks and emphasize both the tree’s story and his own craftsmanship.
